Findlay VW Henderson Joins the VW of America/Redwood Materials Partnership in Battery Recycling Initiative

October 23rd, 2023 by

We are thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership between our Volkswagen dealership in Henderson, Nevada/Volkswagen Group of America (VWGoA) and Redwood Materials to recycle end-of-life batteries from Volkswagen and Audi electric vehicles. This monumental collaboration embodies Volkswagen’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices and eco-conscious initiatives within the local community.

Redwood Materials, an industry leader in recycling electric vehicle batteries and sustainable materials, shares our dedication to environmental responsibility. Together with VWGoA, our dealership is working towards creating a domestic, closed-loop battery supply chain – an initiative that matches perfectly with our Purpose.

Under this partnership, Redwood Materials is working closely with Volkswagen dealerships like ours in a network of over 1,000 dealers to recover, safely package, transport, and recycle end-of-life EV battery packs from VW and Audi vehicles. The hope is to recover 95% of valuable metals, such as nickel, cobalt, lithium, and copper, from these batteries. These reclaimed metals will remain within the United States to be used in remanufacturing anode and cathode components, a crucial step in the sustainable production of battery cells.

“Batteries represent a significant portion of an electric vehicle’s cost, often amounting to 20-30% of the overall price. To drive down the cost of electric vehicles and enhance sustainability, it’s imperative to reduce this material cost through localization and the use of recycled content. Redwood Materials’ comprehensive process is designed to recapture the value of lithium-ion batteries and channel it toward our U.S.-based cell manufacturing partners, ultimately fostering greater sustainability and affordability in American EV production. Moreover, considering that materials within batteries typically travel over 50,000 miles from mine to the battery cell, the infinite recyclability of these metals stands to significantly reduce the carbon cost associated with their initial mining. This will result in batteries becoming progressively more sustainable with each recycling cycle.” – Redwood Materials

Stay tuned for updates as we prepare to participate in the upcoming America Recycles event, where our Consumer Recycling Program, Redwood Materials, and NV Energy will showcase our collective commitment to a greener, more sustainable world.
